When faced with life's challenges,
it is Important to Remember
that although Daniel was saved from the lions,
he was not saved from the Lion's Den.

Finding the Pearls
Sometimes, we focus so long and hard upon the storms, that we forget to look for the pearls. I had a Relief Society Meeting Saturday at the Stake Center. There were women who talked about the trials they are facing now.
One woman is a widow. Her husband passed away from Cancer. She talked of the trial of his illness and the grief. She talked about the healing in the temple and the strength that she has found within herself. She spoke of service, compassion and love.
Another sister spoke of having a disabled daughter. The true light this daughter brings to their family. The things she has taught them all. Her smile and her laughter. Her love. Her mind will always be about a year old, but her joy is everlasting.
Another sister spoke of having a serious illness and the trials that have come from learning to deal with the results of major surgery to her face. She talks of the difficulty of facing others, and of facing herself in the mirror. She talks of the trials and the strength's and the blessings that she has received.
I would have loved to have copies of all the talks to share. I am only sharing the bare bones of them. Perhaps the gift for me is that I know them. I know that they do not focus on the hard in their lives, but on the good. I have seen them endure, smile and carry on.
But the most amazing thing to me is how their struggle and trials have helped their testimonies. They have learned to find the pearls in the midst of continuing storms. They each had a positive to share from their experiences. They have each known hope and despair, trial and grief, pain and misunderstanding. Yet through it all, they were each able to say that they knew Heavenly Father loved them, was with them, looked out for them and blessed them.
They found their pearls.

The Blessings Will Come
1 And it shall come to pass, if thou shalt hearken diligently unto the voice of the Lord thy God, to observe and to do all his commandments which I command thee this day, that the Lord thy God will set thee on high above all nations of the earth:
2 And all these blessings shall come on thee, and overtake thee, if thou shalt hearken unto the voice of the Lord thy God.
Sometimes, it feels like blessings are never going to come. It is like my life is in the chaos of an endless winter. I can't see the blessing that surround me because of the feeling of cold and snow that is so prevalent in my vision.
I like this scripture because it reminds me that, just like spring, the blessings WILL come. Not only will they come, but they will completely overtake me. That is a pretty amazing promise.
I am struggling with trusting the promises of the Lord. That is a terrible place to be. My heart knows His promises are sure, but my head keeps telling me "what if". If only I could get my heart and my head in the same place, maybe I wouldn't worry quite so much.
We each have things that are hard for us. We all have differences and blessings. I think that sometimes we focus so much on the perceived blessing of others, that we forget to find our own.
So, since it is my head that has the problem, I am working on listing the blessing that I do have, and ignoring the ones that I think I want. I know that as I focus on gratitude, my life will be more in tune with that I really have. I also know, in ways that I don't yet understand, that my life is filled with blessings given from God.
He has not left me out just because (for now), I cannot see.

Gratitude
Sometimes, I forget that in spite of all my trials, I still have something to be grateful for. I actually have many, many things to be grateful for. So, this morning I have been focusing on all the blessings that I am given. It fills my heart with joy to open my eyes, look around me, and realize how very blessed I am. I could make a never ending list of the blessings that God has given me, especially if I started naming them. So, so matter what is going wrong in my life, there is really a lot of things that are going right.
It is easy for me to get so lost in focusing on the end of the road, that I forget Heavenly Father wants me to enjoy the journey along the way. We are supposed to feel joy in this life. However, to do that, we have to recognize that we have much to be grateful for.
This season is a wonderful time of year for me. We have our traditions and family that keep us focused on the real meaning behind the dinner. I can also look across the table and realize how much I love everyone seated around me, and how much I miss those who are at another table this year. I feel their love even while I miss their presence.
The problem with the disease of depression is that I seem to focus more on the loss than on the love. And so I have to learn to bring my focus back to what matters most of all. I need to celebrate the joy more and feel the value of every single family member and friend.
Today, remember that there are those who love you, and need you. There are those who miss you and who wish you could be with them, both on this side of the veil and on the other. As I think of all those whom I love, I realize how close they really are. May your heart swell with gratitude and may you know always that you are loved.

What I learned - Oh how great, the plan of our God
We are surrounded by such an astonishing wealth of light and truth that I wonder if we truly appreciate what we have.
President Uchtdof talked about how blessed we are. How we are surrounded by so many amazing things. When we think about the medical care we have today, and the ability to find answers on the internet, the smart phones that have all the information we can imagine at our fingertips, and even the cars and televisions of today. We are literally surrounded by amazing technology that gives us access to things that were once only in a science fiction novel.
President Uchtdorf talked about going to Belfast, in Northern Ireland. While there, he noticed the Belfast Coat of Arms, which includes the motto “Pro tanto quid retribuamus,” or “What shall we give in return for so much?” What a question to ponder as we go through each day. Are we too busy to even realize our blessings? Do we not have time for our scriptures and prayers? Do we forget the great gifts God has surrounded us with every single day?
I invite each of us to consider this question. What shall we give in return for the flood of light and truth God has poured out upon us? What is it worth to us? I think that the best gift of all is to take advantage of the knowledge that we are blessed with. We can study and pray and find the answers to our questions. We can seek and learn. We can follow the commandments and seek the light that is around us.
I have learned that it is so easy to get overwhelmed with the business of every day life. It is easy to put anything that is not a hot topic on the back burner. However, I am also learning that we need to make God a priority in our lives, no matter how busy we might be. He is there. He answers our prayers and He will help us in our daily struggles.
I think the best way to show appreciation is to remember Him in all the little things that surround us. It is not just the big things that make us. We don't have to wait until we are hurting to involve Him in our lives. We just need to remember Him, to know He is there. To know that we are loved. To know that He wants us to come to Him.

Gratitude - The Gift of Silence
The
gift of silence is an invitation to intentionally seek out quiet moments for
yourself. Check out the sounds that are around you right at this moment. What do you hear? Is the TV or radio on? Can you
detect the sounds of traffic outside or the hum of a computer at your desk? Are the children yelling in the background? Are the chickens clucking and the ducks quacking and the goats yelling to be milked? Oh, that would be my life! Sorry about that!
We are constantly surrounded by sounds and I am learning that the cumulative effect of noise can lead to increased stress and overstimulation.
We are constantly surrounded by sounds and I am learning that the cumulative effect of noise can lead to increased stress and overstimulation.
Remember that
there can be noise on the outside and noise on the inside. While we can turn
off a TV, it is not always easy to turn down the volume of the thoughts
inside our own heads. Sometimes it is especially hard to let go of the noise of worry and concern that surrounds us. I know it is something I really have to struggle with.
The noise on the inside can keep me from finding peace. It can keep me from prayer, from scriptures, from meditation, from relaxing. I get so involved with the noise that I can't handle everything that I need to do. And so, I have learned to walk. To get up and go outside. To listen to the sounds of the birds and the squirrels. To let go of the hum of business that I am caught up in and to just take a breath and enjoy the silence of a moment. This month, I choose to give myself this amazing gift. 10 minutes or more of silence each day, so that I can get back on track.
So that I can breath.
So that I can find myself amongst the noise and confusion that surrounds me.
So that I can find Him.

Live With Grace
HAPPINESS CANNOT BE TRAVELED TO, OWNED, EARNED, WORN OR CONSUMED. HAPPINESS IS THE SPIRITUAL EXPERIENCE OF LIVING EVERY MINUTE WITH LOVE, GRACE AND GRATITUDE.
Love, love, love this. Far too often, we seem to think that happiness is something we all deserve. We imagine it all served up on a platter like a Thanksgiving Dinner. It is there for the taking, whether we have done anything ourselves or not. Some people think all they need is more money, more things, or more time and they will be happy. They completely miss the point that happiness is not external. It is what is inside. It is the entire experience, in spite of heartaches, trials and disappointments. Happiness is available to each on of God's children here upon the earth. It is not something that is saved for the elusive future. It comes from the small everyday moments of living. It is not for when I have become skinny, or rich, or inherit a ton of money, or any one of the myriad of ways that we confuse ourselves with the possible meaning of happiness.
Happiness is always found inside ourselves. It does not happen just because someone else wants it too. It is not and never has been anyone else's responsibility to "make" us happy. It is not what your children do, or your husband, or your neighbors or your church. It is a state of mind. It is a spiritual experience. It is a gift we give ourselves in spite of our circumstances. I love that love, grace and gratitude all go together to help us find the happiness that is within.
Happiness is possible.
Happiness is always possible.

Touching Heaven

I have some personal experiences with this one. I used to really struggle with being grateful for my life. I have learned that we all have things that happen to us. We all have difficulties and distress. We all have trials. It is easy to get ourselves so wrapped up in what is wrong with our lives, that we forget to look at all the things that are actually right.
When I changed my sight from the things that have gone wrong, to the blessings that I am surrounded with, things became a lot easier. The more I focused on the good, the less the problems that I was dealing with overwhelmed me. The more I looked with gratitude at the world, the more blessings I found and recognized in my own life.
I have learned, that as hard as it can be to find something to be thankful for, right this very minute, the more blessed I realize that I am when I make the effort in spite of my trials. There are so many happy moments that surround us. It was easy to find the things to be grateful for when I started with the basics. When I covered my family, my home, and the gospel, I continued to find even more in the world around me. Our Heavenly Father did not place us here to be miserable, and as much as I really hate to admit it, the ability to wallow in misery is truly a choice.
What a beautiful thought for me today, the prospect of touching heaven through gratitude. It encourages me to go right now and focus on something else that is a blessing. It reminds me that we can each touch our own small part of heaven right here and right now. All we have to do is find something to be thankful for and focus on that which is positive in our lives. What a blessing! What a gift! What a choice!
May we all come just a little bit closer to Heaven on earth as we reach, and grow, and learn, and most of all, give thanks every single day of our lives.

Wordless Wednesday - Desert Beauty
A single photo
– no words –
capturing a moment from our lives.
A simple, special, extraordinary moment.
A moment
I want to pause, savor and remember.
A moment
that brings a smile to my lips,
and joy to my heart.

Gratitude for the blessings - What do you talk about?
More than you talk about your burdens.
This little guy, is my hero. I wish that I could show you a picture of his beautiful face, but that time is not yet. He was born with so many problems that it would have been easy to focus on all the things he was never supposed to do. Instead, we focus on all the wonderful things that he is learning to do. He is such a blessing and inspiration to our family. His smile will light up my heart each and every time I see it. This guy, only focuses on the blessings in life. He reaches out for them and grasps them tight with both hands. I am not sure that I can ever be that optimistic, but he is teaching me to do a little better every day.
We all have blessings. The surround us in every part of our lives. For some strange reason, it is easier to focus our efforts on the problems and burdens than it is to remember and focus on our blessings. I suppose that is the pessimistic side of my personality coming out. I am working on that. I am seeking to find the blessings that surround me in every part of my life. I have a job that earns enough money to support us, I have the most amazing family. I have people who love me no matter what. I have friends. I have a home. I have a testimony. I could go on and on, yet somehow, when things go wrong, my eyes only see the burdens and forget to focus on the blessings. That is what I want to change. I want and need to be a blessing type of woman. I am exhausted in the trials. I need to be uplifted in the blessings.
The Lord has promised us:
I believe that that works even for the blessings. If we look for them, if we seek them, we will find them always in our lives. They might not be the ones we want right this minute, but I can promise that they will be the ones we need. So, open your heart, open your mouth and talk about your amazing blessings.

Sabbath Day Scribblings - Gratitude for Everything
Thank
The Lord
Thy God
In all things."
D&C 59:7
It can be hard to be thankful for things that you don't think you want or need. It can be hard to find the good under the winter snow of life. But I have learned to rejoice in the seemingly endless days of winter. One of my all time favorites quotes is simply,
"The Bible often says, 'It came to pass,'
It never says, It came to stay!"
I love the early days of winter. The first snow on the ground, the bite of cool in the air. I love the whiteness and the simplicity of the time. I also love having a fire in my fireplace. But as the days go on, and the cold becomes deeper, I start to find myself wishing for spring to come. I can't wait to see the growth start on the trees and in the ground. I get antsy for the planting and the signs of new life. So, at this time, I am trying to remember to Thank Him for everything. Even snow in February.

Gratitude Each Day
no matter our challenges or trials,
there is something in each day
to embrace and cherish.
There is something in each day
that can bring gratitude and joy
if only we will see and appreciate it". Deiter F. Uchtdorf
This man is one of my favorite speakers. He always seems to talk about the things that I need to know and be aware of. It is easy for me to become "lost" in my trials and circumstances. It is easy for me to focus on the hard things to the exclusion of all else.
One of the things I am working very hard on right now is focusing on the joys that are abundant in my life. I know they are there. I know they are all around me. I get to choose exactly what it is that I am going to embrace and cherish. I am exhausted with embracing the bad. I am choosing to focus on the things in my life that I have to be grateful for.
I even started counseling again. This was a hard decision for me as I keep telling myself that I "should" be better. I found a new therapist who gives me homework. (Yep, at my age, I am doing homework again!) I am learning more about myself and my relationships that I ever thought possible. I am even learning that I can change. I can overcome. I can be who I was always meant to be. That is my joy today. I can embrace and cherish the good. I can find gratitude through the sorrows.
I can become like HIM.

Sabbath Day Scribblings - Thankful Hearts
Colossians 3:15-17
15 And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful.
16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.
I love this season of Thanksgiving for all things. It is a beautiful time of year. This year especially, I am trying to let peace rule my heart. I am trying to give thanks in all things. I have so much more than I can ever deserve. May your hearts also be filled with thankfulness on this beautiful day as we each seek to follow Him.
17 And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.

Monday Memoirs - Peace and Serenity
It's Monday again and I hope that you take a moment to write on your own blog something concerning the prompt in your own life. There really are no rules, just something that you want to pass on to your family and friends. Link up at the bottom and share with the rest of us.
PEACE noun
1. The absence of war or other hostilities.
2. An agreement or a treaty to end hostilities.
3. Freedom from quarrels and disagreement; harmonious relations: roommates living in peace with each other.
4. Public security and order: was arrested for disturbing the peace.
5. Inner contentment; serenity: peace of mind.
SERENITY
noun (plural serenities)
1. The state of being calm, peaceful, and untroubled: an oasis of serenity amidst the bustling city
Once upon a time, I used to believe that peace was never possible. I had too many struggles in living to even think about finding peace. Church was a place that I went to, sat on a bench and tried my best to keep six little ones “sort of” reverent. I don’t know if I even got a single thing out of the Sacrament talks until after the majority of my children were grown. My ideas of peace have changed a lot over the years.
I used to imagine peace as lying next to the ocean or a lake or a river and just relaxing; spending time communicating with God, and learning to know myself. As I have gotten older, I have learned that peace and serenity both come from within and not so much without. Peace can be found in simple moments of life when there is no arguing or hostilities. In the case of our children, dinner time is not the time to argue. It is our efforts for peace in our world of chaos. Peace can be found in uplifting music, in reading good books, in studying the Scriptures and in spending time with my family. Peace doesn’t have to be quiet, (although that is such a nice minute or two to find), it just needs to fill my heart.
Serenity means something a little more difficult to me. It means to find myself filled, to know
that I am enough, to feel His spirit in my heart and in my soul, to really hear the answers to prayer and know that I am not alone. It truly does mean to find a place of calm within myself. A place where my troubles no longer are all I think of. For me, serenity is being free from worry and stress.
When I was young, I thought that you had to be old to experience either of those things, but as I have grown, I have learned to find them in the smallest moments and the wonder of the everyday blessings that are so much a part of my life. I have learned to see the tender mercies of the Savior in the world around me.
I find peace as I say my prayers, and mean them. I find peace as I help children with homework and kayak on a mountain lake. I find peace in the soaring of eagles and the beauty of a thunderstorm. I find peace when I see God’s hand in the world around me. I find peace when I quit looking for a quiet life and focus on amazing blessings. I find peace in the small, everyday matters of the heart.
I find serenity as I come to know my Heavenly Father. To realize that I am never truly alone and to find His promises are sure. I find serenity in the calm that comes after the storm. In the blessings that always follow a trial, and in the knowledge of His redeeming love.

To Make a Difference
To make a difference in someone's life,
you don't have to be brilliant, rich,
beautiful, or perfect;
you just have to care.
Today is my favorite day of the week! It is Five Minute Friday! That is where a group of us (a really big group!) get together over at Lisa Jo's place to share five minutes on the same prompt. It is a chance to write your heart out for five minutes without worrying whether it is just right or not. So, take a few moments and join us.
This weeks prompt is:
Gratitude
START
There are so many things that I am grateful for, so many opportunities for gratitude in my life. I used to have a hard time finding positive things to focus on. It seemed as if so much of my life was negative. Gradually, I found the negative overwhelmingly pushed away the positive. I never felt good. I found myself being critical and constantly judging myself. I honestly believed that I had no worth. That nothing I did mattered. I crawled onto my bed, hid under to covers and waited desperately to die.
Realizing that I was not in a good place, I forced myself to go and get help. It was a long road back. It twists and turns back in on itself from time to time. Sometimes I am healthy, and sometimes I am overwhelmed with depression. The one major skill I have learned on this journey is that it is essential to find things in my life to have gratitude for. They can be small or large, they can be friends or family, they can be beauty or health. But in finding the small everyday things to be grateful for, my focus has gradually changed.
The more I focus on gratitude, the more I find to be grateful for. The more beauty I see, the more I find hiding along the way. A little bit of thankfulness, breeds even more; until I look at the world around me with entirely new eyes. I know that I don't have to be perfect. I only have to be myself and allow Him to use me where He wills.
Through it all, I have learned that gratitude is not only a blessing, it is a gift that we give ourselves. It teaches us to really see the world around us. Gratitude gives us new hearts and new eyes and new understanding.
I am enough. He has placed me here and for that, my heart is filled with gratitude.
STOP
Now it is your turn. Tell us in five minutes what gratitude means to you. Don't forget to join us back over at Lisa Jo's to link up your thoughts.

The Wrong Turns
So many times,
I have wished I could have lived my life
without any wrong turns.
In reality, that path doesn't exist.
We fall, we get lost, we make mistakes,
We get up and live!
These are a few of my little testaments to living. They remind me that I am loved, even when I don't feel lovable. I tend to be very hard on myself. I remember the mistakes I make. I would give anything to be able to go back and change them, yet I know, that they have led me to this place with all these little people who remind me that it is okay to not be perfect. They love me anyway.
You can see how much fun they are having (and how little attention they are paying to the photographer, who is me!) They laugh, they giggle, they play, they run, they want to come to my house and be in the woods and spend time together. They want to help Papa with the fire and the chickens, they want to drink hot chocolate and eat brownies and most of all, they want to snuggle into any lap that can hold them. My lap expands to hold those children. My love grows a little more each and every time a new one is born.
When I look into those faces, I see that no matter how many wrong turns I have taken, those turns have led me right to them. Right to this single wonderful and beautiful moment. I was a mother first, then a grandmother. I made mistakes, but I also taught my children what love really is. I taught them what being a family means. I taught them that they are worth so very much. They, in turn taught their children those things which were most important of all. It comes right back to me with little hearts and sticky kisses. I have been so very blessed.
They teach me to get up and live!!

Gratitude Brings Peace
My first thanksgiving as a mother and a wife, found us very poor. Living on a meager serviceman's salary, made making the ends meet, nearly impossible. We weren't in military housing yet, and so were renting a small house off base. There was just enough food in the pantry to make it paycheck to paycheck. Thanksgiving came and it was right before a payday, so there was very little to eat in the house. The only meat we could find were fish sticks frozen in the freezer. We used those for our turkey, and made some homemade french fries with some canned peaches for dessert. It wasn't the best Thanksgiving meal that I have ever had, but it was one of the most memorable. I know I cried before dinner. I was so discouraged. I didn't cook well even if we would have had the right materials for dinner, but I learned an amazing lesson.
No matter what our circumstances from moment to moment, there is something to be thankful for. Over the years, I remember the fish sticks instead of turkey, with much gratitude. We laughed, we played cards, we played with the baby, and we enjoyed our very first Thanksgiving. Fish sticks and all.
I have learned that we all could benefit greatly from the results of gratitude in our lives. So, why don't we commit to a practice of being grateful on a daily basis. Did you know that it takes a multiple number of positive comments to erase one negative comment in our daily interaction? Let us consciously dress ourselves in gratefulness every morning as we get ready to begin a new day. Living a life of gratitude carries a sense of peace and bliss, a sense of fulfillment, a sense a enough.

God-Given Friends
the good Lord gave them to me."
Ralph Waldo Emerson
This year has taught me many things. Probably one of the most important is that He knows exactly what I need and when I need it most. When my best friend decided that she did not want to have anything to do with me any more, I felt so lost and alone. I did not have any other friends. For me, making friends is difficult. I love people, I have lots of acquaintances, I care for people and I want to help them, but I don't really have many people that I go to when my heart is aching. I didn't have anyone else in my life that lived close to me that I could share my thoughts, my dreams, and my girl time with.
I was so lonely for a while. I didn't even know how to start to find new friends. Then, really in ways I still don't understand, they came to me. Now I am surrounded. I am so blessed with friends. People who know my story. People who are there for me. Women who care. I am overwhelmed with the love and support that have come to me through these amazing women in my life.
I know that I didn't have anything to do with finding new friends. The Lord sent them to me when I needed them most. He let them know that I needed them. It has been an amazing experience. I am learning that real friends know that sometimes you give and sometimes you receive and that is OK. Sometimes, they know what I need without me asking.
One of my friends is a doctor who knows I get migraines. One week, after a particularly nasty one that wouldn't go away, she saw me at church and asked if I was alright. I told her that I still had a headache, but was going to go home and go to bed. As soon as church was over, she showed up at my door, shot in hand to take away the pain.
I suppose the best thing that I have learned from all this, the most sacred part, is that we need to lay our grief at the Lord's feet and trust Him that He will help us through. We need to pour our hearts out to Him when we are needing and let Him decide what we really need to get us through. I have learned that I am never alone. That He is always by me. I have learned that those who He sends stand with me through the hard times and support me no matter how difficult those times are.
I cherish the great gift of friendship that is sent by Him.

Faith in Advance
Sometimes, I get so stuck in the moment, that I forget God has it all in the hollow of His Hand. He knows the end, when I am only focused on the middle. I am working on recognizing His hand in my life, no matter how the middle currently feels in the pit of my stomach.
When I take a moment to look around me, I realize that I have much to be grateful for. I do have many blessings. I just have to look a little past the moment to find them. I can say in all honesty, that everything I have been through up to now in my life, I would not change.
Though there are bad things, there are also good ones. My life has taught me strength and courage. I know that I am not alone. I have felt God's gifts in my life and know that He is ever mindful of me.
I suppose, that one of the hardest things for me to learn is to simply trust Him. It is easy to see his Hand when I look backwards. It is much harder to see it in the moment. So for today, I am trying to look past the hard things and have more trust in His grace. I know He lives, I know He loves me, I know He hears and answers prayers and I know that He will help me to make sense of all this in reverse.

Giving Thanks
12 And as he entered into a certain village, there met him ten men that were lepers, which stood afar off:
13 And they lifted up their voices, and said, Jesus, Master, have mercy on us.
14 And when he saw them, he said unto them, Go shew yourselves unto the priests. And it came to pass, that, as they went, they were cleansed.
15 And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, and with a loud voice glorified God,
16 And fell down on his face at his feet, giving him thanks: and he was a Samaritan.
17 And Jesus answering said, Were there not ten cleansed? but where are the nine?
18 There are not found that returned to give glory to God, save this stranger.
19 And he said unto him, Arise, go thy way: thy faith hath made thee whole.
I wonder how the Savior felt when only one returned to thank Him. He did this amazing miracle and they were so excited that they hurried off without even a single word of thanks. The one who did return to thank Him was a Samaritan. These were people who did not believe. Yet, this one man remembered and returned. I find it interesting that ten were cleansed, but only one was made whole. I think that this must have been a wonderful and amazing blessing in his life.
Bishop Merrill J. Bateman taught: “In becoming a whole person, the grateful leper was healed inside as well as on the outside. That day nine lepers were healed skin deep, but only one had the faith to be made whole” (in Conference Report, Apr. 1995, 16; or Ensign, May 1995, 14).
The Savior alone knows how help us. It is to Him that we owe our gratitude. I think of His great example of strength. What strength He must have had to almost never be thanked or appreciated. What strength it must have taken to continue walking with those who did not recognize who He was or what His purpose was in coming. May each of us take a moment today (or even several moments) to remember those things which we have been blessed with in our lives. May we each remember Him who helps to bear our burdens and heal our hearts. May our faith in Him help each of us to truly become whole.
Washed Clean
by Boyd K. Packer
In ancient times the cry “Unclean!”
Would warn of lepers near.
“Unclean! Unclean!” the words rang out;
Then all drew back in fear,
Lest by the touch of lepers’ hands
They, too, would lepers be.
There was no cure in ancient times,
Just hopeless agony.
No soap, no balm, no medicine
Could stay disease or pain.
There was no salve, no cleansing bath,
To make them well again.
But there was One, the record shows,
Whose touch could make them pure;
Could ease their awful suffering,
Their rotting flesh restore.
His coming long had been foretold.
Signs would precede His birth.
A Son of God to woman born,
With power to cleanse the earth.
The day He made ten lepers whole,
The day He made them clean,
Well symbolized His ministry
And what His life would mean.
However great that miracle,
This was not why He came.
He came to rescue every soul
From death, from sin, from shame.
For greater miracles, He said,
His servants yet would do,
To rescue every living soul,
Not just heal up the few.
Though we’re redeemed from mortal death,
We still can’t enter in
Unless we’re clean, cleansed every whit,
From every mortal sin.
What must be done to make us clean
We cannot do alone.
The law, to be a law, requires
A pure one must atone.
He taught that justice will be stayed
Till mercy’s claim be heard
If we repent and are baptized
And live by every word. …
If we could only understand
All we have heard and seen,
We’d know there is no greater gift
Than those two words—“Washed clean!”
